Everyone knows that the process of relocating an entire house is a complicated task and it involves time, money, and patience. And, you must ensure that the one you choose is outstanding right from the first point of contact till the final delivery of the items at the destination. Thus, you must be aware of the common moving scams that you need to avoid when hiring a moving company.

What is a moving scam?

We don’t live in an ideal world where everyone is honest and work as they promise. It is possible that you can get in touch with dishonest people when you are looking for trustworthy companies that can help you with your relocation. This case especially arises when you have not done thorough research on the movers due to any specific reason. Becoming a victim of a moving scam is the worst nightmare come true for you. To avoid this situation, you must keep a check on a few things that are discussed in this blog.

Types of moving scams and tips to prevent them

Understand how to protect yourself from moving fraud by reading these excellent tips and steer away from these red flags. This fraud prevention checklist contains proven smart ways to avoid any type of moving scam.

1. False moving reviews

Whenever you check the authentication of a company, you prefer reading the reviews of the same on different online platforms. However, dishonest moving companies leave highly positive reviews about the company on their own using different fraudulent methods to mislead people. These movers know that people usually search for companies online to check the reviews of their previous customers so they make fake reviews to let you believe in them.

Solution:

Don’t believe in the extremely positive reviews.

Ask your friends, colleagues, or neighbors to recommend you some good companies.

Check the social media pages of these companies to check the original reviews posted by real users.

Make sure that the company is registered with some reliable authority.

2. Lowball estimates

Don’t ever fall for the low-ball estimates that these companies provide you. The first target of the rogue movers is to attract their clients by offering them a relatively lower price than what is prevailing in the market. They make such fake promises that are seldom met. They offer you the estimate over the call or via email or text, which is not a perfect way to get an estimate. Sometimes, some movers offer deceptive low-ball estimates after conducting an in-house survey. Remember, the final price will be a lot more than what they have initially stated. You need to be careful in such cases and check for any signs of suspicious behavior.

Solution:

Don’t accept the estimates over the phone or via email. Even an in-house survey done hastily and without any discussion is suspicious.

Never say yes to any mover who refuses to perform an on-site inspection of the household property.

Always get an estimate from at least 3 to 4 different companies for comparison purposes and to know the exact market rate.

Ask the mover about why they are offering such a low price when others are not. If you are not satisfied with the answer, then simply don’t hire.

3. Large amount of deposit

Genuine companies will never ask you for a huge amount as a deposit in advance. They will rather charge around 10-15% of the total estimate to book your slot. The rouge movers usually ask for quite a huge amount and that too in cash. If they do such a thing, then they are definitely suspicious.

Solution:

Don’t give any money to the movers in advance, especially in cash.

Make use of a credit card to pay the deposit amount.

4. Goods held hostage

The rouge movers can hold your belongings as hostage and ask for the ransom money in return for the same. This could be the worst care scenario that you definitely want to avoid. If the items are expensive or of sentimental value, then the case becomes more critical.

Solution:

Research well about the movers.

Notify the police about the same.

Lodge a complaint on the hotline numbers.

5. Never sign a blank or incomplete document

Make sure to check the moving documents carefully before signing. The frauds are such that they usually get your signature by keeping some blank or incomplete documents in between. Make sure to carefully read and understand the terms and conditions of the moving documents and then sign them.

Solution:

Under no circumstance you must sign the documents without reading.

Pay attention to all the details mentioned and cross check that everything is written that are verbally agreed.
